Rusting HeatersWhat can most of us say and recall about our first apartments? Some of our great memories revolve around them. If you think back, you were learning and experimenting as each day went by. You had finally reached adulthood and were out on your own. You wanted to make this place a wonderful haven to come home to. A place that was warm and inviting but organized and uncluttered.
The room that seemed to be at the heart of your home was the kitchen. This room held sweet aromas and was also the gathering place for those who would drop by. For my situation it happened to be the smallest of spaces for the many tasks at hand that took place in this room. It seemed I had many more pots and pans and gadgets than this kitchen could hold. Hearing from others, even if you are lucky to have a good size kitchen, it seemed that you could never have enough space.
Along with the necessary organization that is needed, you also want this area to be as attractive as possible. This does not have to be a difficult task. With a few creative ideas this can be accomplished.
My first kitchen had four small cabinets, two drawers and a small amount of counter space. It seemed that every time I opened a cabinet something else broke or chipped. If I didn't do something soon I would have nothing left. My cabinets were overflowing.
I still desired that open look and feel of this room and did not want to give that up. What was needed was to free up some space and update my kitchen at the same time. What I needed was a functional eye catching feature that enhanced the atmosphere of the room.
After searching through home decorating magazines, the internet and stores, I finally came upon a great discovery. My discovery was the wall pot rack. Pot racks serve three main purposes at the same time. They are decorative, add much needed space and keep your pots and pans at arms reach. These little details help make the difference between a boring and non-personalized kitchen as compared to an organized and comfortable looking kitchen.
One of my pot racks hung between my two cabinets and the other pot rack I placed over the kitchen island. Choosing a highly contrasting finish to my other decor made a more stunning effect and these became the focal point of the room.
One of the pot racks came with lights aiming downward. This helped illuminate and added an ambiance to my working space. The other wall pot rack had shelves that I kept my cook books, utensils, herbs and oils and decorative nick knacks. Both pot racks had grids that allowed me to adjust the hooks for hanging my pans in the formation that was most convenient. These pot racks were capable of folding up, as well, if not in use.
The most rewarding attributes that the wall pot racks presented upon me was that I became less frustrated. Preparing meals became fun and not time consuming. A great benefit that goes along with serving their function, I noticed that I loved looking over at my pot racks and realizing how beautiful my cookware looked on display.
My wall pot racks prevented the wear and tear pot and pans get from stacking them inside of each other in lower kitchen cabinets. This will add years to the life of my cookware.
If your kitchen storage space has become over crowded, I strongly suggest considering a wall pot rack. It will make your life easier and the result will be that dream kitchen you have always desired.

The lifespan of a tornado can be anything from a couple of minutes to an hour or more. But in their brief life they wreak a destructive havoc on anything in their path. And yet they hold such a fascination that we continue to chase, photograph and explore these monsters more and more with each passing year.
I don't want to talk too much about how a twister forms, but basically tornadoes develop close to the boundary between the up-currents and down-draughts in a storm cloud. The typical funnel cloud of a tornado develops first from the cloud base and then extends down to ground level until we have the familiar spinning vortex.
The winds within a tornado are incredibly strong and can reach in excess of 300mph (483kph) picking up huge objects such as cars and buildings. In fact in a wind of 300mph there is very little that can survive. Even concrete can be blown to pieces. Wind speeds inside a powerful tornado are notoriously difficult to measure as all measuring equipment tends to be destroyed. So really we are guessing at the top speeds.
Fortunately only a very small percentage of thunderstorms will provide the ingredients necessary for a tornado, and even fewer of these tornadoes will actually strike populated land. And thank goodness for that. As an example of the terrible toll a twister can take the 'Tri-State' tornado, which passed through Missouri, Illinois and Indiana on March 18th 1925, killed 695 people during its 3 hour life along a 219 mile path. This remains the deadliest tornado on record.
But storms chasers actively seek out, follow and intercept these killers. It's much like following a crazy man with a loaded gun, shooting randomly in any direction!
So why do they do this? Well I suppose it is obvious. The thrill of the chase, the adrenalin rush at being so close to danger and of course to wonder at the beauty and magnificence of mother nature's intense power. To catch, film and feel the rush of a tornado at close quarters, without getting seriously injured or killed, is the holy grail of a storm chaser. There is another factor in this, and that is the scientific study of a tornado, to unravel the mystery of how they form and work, and help predict their potential route to help warn people in their path and so save lives.
And though the saving of lives is very gallant, I have a strong feeling that the majority of chasers are in it just for the ride! And good luck to them.

Fixing holes in your wall can be a challenge if you have no idea how to repair the wall or even how it is built.
Have you ever slammed a door shut because you were a little mad a something of someone. Well now have you ever slammed a door open a little to hard and then hearing a sound like something just stuck to the wall.
Well now that would be the sound of your door knob going through the drywall or plaster. Oh crap now what do I do. And don't try to blame this one on the kids either. Right about now you are wondering how in the heck am I going to repair this and not let it happen again.
You should have a nice round hole in the door. Try to remove the piece of drywall without it falling into the wall. After you get this piece of drywall out set it to the side for possible reinstallation. Now get a measuring tape to see if the wall is framed with 2 x 4 or 2 x 6.
If the wall is framed with 2 x 4 it will measure three and one half inches in between the drywall or plaster. If it is a 2 x 6 framed wall it will measure five and one half inches in between the drywall or plaster.
We will use the 2 x 4 wall for our example on fixing the hole from the door knob. Cut a piece of 2 x 4 about 5 inches long and taper both ends of the 2 x 4 so you will be able to slide the piece of wood into the damage hole.
When you slip the wood into the hole set it on edge and screw the sides into the drywall. This will hold the2 x 4 in place. Next reinstall the piece of drywall you removed and screw it into the drywall. Now for the secret to finishing the wall.
Go down to your local home improvement store and purchase a round rubber door stop that glues onto the wall. These rubber and sometimes plastic door stops will be about 6 inches in diameter and work great for these holes.
You could also buy a few more of them to protect the walls from big bad door openers.

The ABI believes that up to one third of the planned three million new homes to be built will be constructed on flood plains Consequently the ABI has suggested that its members may have to remove flood cover as a standard component of their policies, should these plans see the light of day. The position of the ABI has drawn criticism from Ian Wright, the Housing Minister, who maintains that current planning regulations are sufficiently stringent to guard against the risk of newly built houses rapidly becoming uninhabitable through flooding.
Wrights believes that because all local authorities have to consult with the Environment Agency before giving the seal of approval to new developments, home insurance providers have nothing to worry about.
The whole question of flooding and house insurance has registered more strongly on the national radar in recent times because of recent disastrous flooding, not to mention all the hullabaloo about global warming. News images of towns in Gloucestershire completely cut off by flood water linger a long time in peoples' memories.
All told, the 2007 floods cost three billion pounds. Dust Clogging Bath Fan VentAs more and more buyers are wanting energy-efficient and green homes, builders and sellers are trying to meet this growing demand. In the past few months, the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) has incorporated a green features section on every MLS report where builders and sellers can list whether the home has Energy Star appliances, solar panels, bamboo floors, and rain collection systems already in place.
If you're looking to buy an environmentally friendly home, the drawback is that most of the homes you'll find are new construction. This is great if you're wanting a newer home anyway, but a lot of green buyers don't want new construction because of the trees that are cut down and the idea that there are already enough homes on the market right now without having to build more!
The best advice for these buyers looking for older homes is to search the MLS using the new green features option. Find a home that already has some of the features you want, and then use the money you'll save by buying now to go towards other features that you add in either now or along and along. Earth friendly materials are starting to make their way into mainstream stores, like Lowe's and Home Depot. So, it's becoming much easier to find these materials. Sure, you won't find items such as reclaimed wood in a Lowe's, but you will in specialty stores around the area. So, why not take a home you love and make it as green as you want it to be?
For newer homes in Charleston that are geared to be energy-efficient, you'll find a few neighborhoods to choose from. All of the homes in Summertrees were built to EarthCraft standards. This neighborhood is on Johns Island, and the builder was Brentwood Homes. EarthCraft is a program with guidelines ensuring that homes reduce energy by using tighter building construction, air sealing, controlled ventilation, as well as more efficient duct work, HVACs, and vents. Water usage is also reduced, which cuts down on utility bills. Last, the interior and exterior paint is low VOC. These homes are also supposed to have better indoor air quality for an overall healthier lifestyle for the owners.
Another builder, David Weekley Homes, is also starting to build green homes. This builder uses a different program called Environments for Living, which is a national program with three levels of green-ness. David Weekley's new homes are classified in the highest level of requirements, which is the Diamond level. Buyers are also guaranteed that their new home will not use more than a certain amount of energy from heating and air conditioning. If the buyer finds that the home exceeds this amount, he or she will be reimbursed the difference in cost. Of course, this reimbursement does not account for the energy wasted during that time, but at least builders are trying to hold their homes accountable for energy standards. And, this is a step in the right direction, I think.
